Brian Warner, de son vrai nom, est né le 5 janvier 1969 dans à Canton dans l'Ohio.
Marilyn Manson a une enfance un peu chaotique, il est renvoyé de plusieurs écoles, et est plutôt mal accueilli par les enfants de son âge.
Plus tard, il sera d'abord journaliste et critique musicale. C'est alors qu'il rencontre Scott Mitchell avec qui il décide de former un groupe.
Les deux jeunes hommes prennent chacun un pseudonyme. Ce sera Marilyn Manson pour Brian (Marilyn pour Marilyn Monroe et Manson pour le célèbre tueur Charles Manson) et Daisy Berkowitz pour Scott.
Ils sont rapidement rejoints par Gidget Gein (à la basse) et Madonna Rayne Gracy (au clavier). Le groupe s'appelle alors Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.
Ils se produisent dans des salles et enregistrent des cassettes. Trent Reznor du groupe Nine Inch Nails les remarquent alors et leur proposent de faire sa première partie.
En 1994, c'est la sortie du premier album « Potrait of an American Family » pour le groupe. Les concerts sont plutôt violents et font parler d'eux. Puis en 1996, sort le très controversé « Antichrist Superstar ».
Le succès est au rendez vous. Depuis, plusieurs albums ont suivi notamment « Mechanical Animals », « Holy Wood » ou encore « The golden age of Grotesque ». Marilyn Manson est adulé par son public. Ce qui lui vaudra d'être mis en cause dans la tuerie de Colombine pour avoir influencé par sa musique les adolescents coupable du carnage. Lors de la sortie du film « Bowling for Colombine », Marilyn Manson revient sur les accusations et apparaît posé, calme et étonne par son discernement.
En 2000, Marilyn Manson a crée son propre label « Posthuman record ».
